I have a Garmin with UK/Europe/US maps and have found it invaluable on US trips on several occasions, most notably when off-roading near the San Boreas pass in Colorado, completely lost in a rented jeep following a trail which turned out to be a dried up river bed, the Garmin found our position and guided us back to the hotel! Only warning is to avoid the 'shortest route' options in cities such as LA which can take you through some very dodgy areas. You will occasionally get instructions such as "turn right in 240 miles" but overall we wouldn't travel without it.
