Having driven Denver-Seattle-San Diego-Denver in 2010 I would thoroughly 
recommend a sat-nav for the trip. It is cheaper to buy one and take it with you 
than hire one from the car hire thieves companies.
Super in finding your way to pre-booked hotels and useful in that it had a 
'which is the nearest hotel/motel' and 'nearest filling station' guide.
I had no trouble with a Tom Tom Go 930 but I have had a Garmin and they are 
good, too.
