I assume the car has not covered high mileages and therefore we can rule out
items like camshaft or valve gear wear?

A 2001 +8 is almost certainly "Hotwire" injection. (Easy to check , does it
have a distributor , Yes= Hotwire : No = GEMS)

I have experienced "rev hanging" in my Hotwire +8 , on a few occasions , prior
to my fitting a new Tornado chip , after which the problem went away. I don't
think the chip solved the problem , but I suspect that the checks that were
done on the electronics before fitting the chip did.

This system is pretty foolproof , so component faults are relatively rare ,
95%+ of the time it is a poor connection in the wiring or electrical/electronic
components that is the issue , and these are notoriously tricky to diagnose and
track down.

Looking at a couple of websites it would appear that the only mechanical issue
is a possible carbon build up in the Air Mass Sensor , this can be tested by
swapping the component for a known good one, or trying to clean the wire by
dipping in an ultrasonic electronic cleaning bath.

Regards

Andy
