I'm going to raise my hand on this one (and would bet people like Todd Feiertag will also). I'm very confident in my ability to spot restoration and fakes without the need of a third party to do so. But since you've raised the subject - it seems like now more than ever would be a great time for a 3rd party grading/authentication service to finally get rolling (like CGC for comics). Think of the million plus dollars that would have been saved by collectors over the past couple of years if the hobby had been more willing to embrace this service.
