Maybe it is about perspective. Mine: Impoverished rural school system, geographic isolation, no public library, majority of schools-no school library, students disenfranchised readers for whom traditionally shelved books are like offering the most horrific speller a dictionary--a tool that can overwhelm rather than support (compounded with library aides who may or may not deeply know readers and their libraries, and are not in a position to guide, entice), very few books in most homes, community literacy rates low.
I don't see classroom libraries as optional. I see them as critical. A need that ranks up there with food, shelter and clothing, if we want to break the cycle of low literacy skills. Bookrooms are a terrific asset for instructional reading, but kids learn to love reading when books that appeal are available to them and they have time to follow their passions through pages and pages and pages.
