Hillary,

I have been a Reading Recovery teacher since 1993. I have taught this in
two different states. I feel it is a wonderful program. It works
beautifully in my current district, so much so, we have trained more
teachers than we have RR slots so they can use the strategies in their first
grade classrooms. The What Works Clearinghouse has given this program
acceptable marks in all areas. It does not "cure" students with special
needs, but we sometimes have trouble getting placements for those who truly
need additional help because RR has raised their reading and writing so
much. Not all children thrive with this, but most do. Last year I had 8/9
children discontinue. I do see some of them needing some additional help in
second, but through the years have seen that usually by third grade they had
put it all together and could attain average status. Of course it isn't a
sure bet, but I prefer this intervention to any I have seen or tried. The
knowledge I have gotten through this program has made me a better reading
teacher than I could have ever imagined before the training. The on-going
professional development model is based on the best practices for PD. I
know many local districts have dropped RR or cut back with fewer teachers,
but my district sees the benefits and I believe will continue this
worthwhile program because of the benefits to children.
First time responder,
Cheryl in IL
