Doctors can be good people or bad people. Some of them are very good at what they do and some are bad. But there seems to be an understanding among doctors that they need to have a standard of ethics that applies to all of them.

WM: I don't think that is true. There is many and many a doctor who should have had his/her license yanked except that other doctors let it slide. Same goes for lawyers or nurses or any other employment group. A member has to do something truly egregious to get nailed by the board of standards.

This is something I truly don't understand about police. Like doctors, they can be good people or bad people. They can be good at what they do or bad. But the police don't seem to believe that consistent, well-enforced standards of ethics would benefit their profession rather than harm it.

WM: Actually, I think you will find that among the younger cops there is that understanding. However, these folks are in a real pickle; the same guy who thumps the public won't hesitate to screw with a fellow cop. Call for backup and no one shows up. Every cop wants to go home to his/her family at the end of shift.
