True, unions do have a purpose but they also take a portion of that hourly rate. Plus, when the workers go on strike whether you agree or not you have too or face repercussions (sp?).
The true point to the hourly rate mentioned below is, if you take the gig you are either desperate, young, foreign, or moonlighting. A seasoned person wouldn't probably take it, and the problem today is there are more postings like below than you can count on a 100 people. Plus, as I mentioned before the person farming the gig is probably taking advantage of anyone working it. The standard for a W2 hourly employee (no benefits) is usually 75% of the billable rate charged to a client, while 1099 is roughly 90%. That means they take 25% to pay for taxes and their overhead. These numbers of course are average and can differ based on agencies and individuals needs/requirements. By the way to add one last comment about unions. The unions have messed things up for themselves by the crippling affect they have on individuals when they strike with the airlines, trains, ports, and so on. It has put our economy at risk or in my case affected my ability to get home via the airline when they go on strike Wednesday and I am trying to get home on a Friday. Just think many years ago the government talked about requiring software engineers/developers to be licensed, which would put us in a bad situation of getting sued (sp?). I never noticed anything but that I got great benifits and a rediculous hourly rate. In 1982 I was making 13.52 an hour checking groceries. Plus double time on Sundays and triple time on Holidays. I made over 30k in 1982 while working an average of just over 30 hours a week... of course being single I worked all Sundays and Holidays quite happily. 40 bucks an hour for missing out on the July 4th fireworks while 22 years old seemed hardly difficult price to pay. There is something common and unfortunate in all unions I heard about from my buddies and relatives who happened to join them: after a little while a union is going to take advantage of its hard working members much more efficiently than the employer. So, unless you are going to leave the technical side and join the dark one (meaning -- union administration), a union may not be a beneficial idea for you. For some intermediate form, though, take a look at http://www.freelancersunion.org/. I am not saying they are not like all others unions (and I am not a member myself, I am permanent as of now), but at least they do not have (and supposedly won't have any soon) an exlusive with any employer/trade of type "union job".
