Well, I did not mean to talk for every union, just for those my dears and friends were close to. The last of those was the one they have for medical emergency technicians (EMT) in NYC. My nephew worked for CityWide for a year or so. For this short period one or two generation of U-bosses got jailed for bribery and misusing union money (I am not sure about their level), still they continued mistreating workers, cooperating with the administration on any account (including delays in insuring their workers even longer than was written in the contract that in case of my nephew led to the actual loss). Of course this one is slightly specific: workers are unable to attend meetings because out-of-hours job is normal for EMTs and the contract does not oblige the administration to let them meet. Basically, those who work hard do not have the ability to discuss the contract. They do not get any doubles/triples for any holidays or nights, only 50% for more than 12 hours a day -- but this does not happen often.
Not that I liked the topic -- I just did not want to be considered unfounded. I never noticed anything but that I got great benifits and a rediculous hourly rate. In 1982 I was making 13.52 an hour checking groceries. Plus double time on Sundays and triple time on Holidays. I made over 30k in 1982 while working an average of just over 30 hours a week... of course being single I worked all Sundays and Holidays quite happily. 40 bucks an hour for missing out on the July 4th fireworks while 22 years old seemed hardly difficult price to pay. There is something common and unfortunate in all unions I heard about from my buddies and relatives who happened to join them: after a little while a union is going to take advantage of its hard working members much more efficiently than the employer. So, unless you are going to leave the technical side and join the dark one (meaning -- union administration), a union may not be a beneficial idea for you. For some intermediate form, though, take a look at http://www.freelancersunion.org/. I am not saying they are not like all others unions (and I am not a member myself, I am permanent as of now), but at least they do not have (and supposedly won't have any soon) an exlusive with any employer/trade of type "union job".
