Not wireless, I'm using powerline / homeplug networking. Specifically 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePlug_Powerline_Alliance#AV Homeplug AV 
which should provide plenty bandwidth. And apparently does, but not when
connected to mvpmc.

The source is PAL. I backed up one of my standard DVDs using DVDFab - just a
simple rip without compression. I'm trying to play the VOBs it produced.
They play OK until the bitrate goes up, then it goes choppy, then it
recovers.

Not an option just now. My server is a "vintage" Pentium III running Ubuntu
8.04 server.
