I believe most F27 sailors believe the baby stay is not an asset after the 2nd spreader modification and I agree except for one condition.
We had the need to set a second reef and found that the mast inverts when the main sheet is hauled. I believe the baby stay will help prevent this. The top of the main is well below the attatchment of the jib stay and will deflect the mast aft. The first indication was the lower (inner) shrouds were dead slack (as in flop, flop) and the intermediate ones were loose.
I went foreward and watched the mast flex into a sine wave which kind of told me to do something. I grabbed the topping lift and asked Linda to ease the main. I shortened the topping lift which transferred some of the load to the top of the mast. I'm not so quick to double reef and if needed will jury rig a backstay with a spare haliard.
Understanding this quirk, I still prefer to loose the baby stay.
Anyone else ever notice this?
