This has also been my experience. I have synthetic cap shrouds, so
cant measure their tension, but it sure seems they are cranked down
more (double spreader sans baby stay) than the stainless ones were
(single spreader avec baby stay) to get a nice mast curve and the
proper forestay tension. The curve high on the mast is obvious with
the boat on the trailer.
I've never seen my double spreader mast invert or noodle - single
spreader was scary - especially with the code Zero. The mast barely
deflects side to side even with one cap shroud totally tight and the
other completely slack. But I can see how it (inversion) might happen
in extreme double reef conditions.
I still have the baby stay chainplate installed (and the bloody toe
scars to go with it) - Might make sense to keep it if you felt the
need to set up a baby stay (synthetic of course) on the fly. I think
I'd probably be lying ahull and praying alot at that point tho, not
shinnying up the mast........
