I have a line that I use for getting away from the dock. It ties to the U
bolt at the forward beam intersection at the float, and goes around a dock
cleat, and back to one of the spinnaker cam cleats on the coaming. When I'm
ready to back off the dock, I release that line, back away, and once clear,
retrieve the line. The line isn't long enough to snag the prop, so that's
not an issue if I don't get it in quickly.
But it'll go from one of the aft lifting eyes to that chainplate, and back
to the other aft lifting eye. (Of course I have to remove it from the
beam/float intersection....) I don't remember if I ran it through the
forward lifting eyes, I probably did. There's no jackline forward of that
point, but with my free-flying jib there's little reason to go forward if
I'm not using the bowsprit.
Other than that, and there's probably other places to tie off a jackline, I
can't see any reason to keep that chainplate.
