First, I have the double diamond and find my Forespar mast is a lot
stiffer in side to side motion all the way to the top. I do notice
one problem without the babystay. In order to achieve the tension
required (43 on loos) for the lowers it takes a lot more downward
tension in the since they are not pulling back against the babystay's
forward pull. This does make it hard to achieve a smooth bend in the
mast as the bend is all in the upper diamond and when the lowers are
tensioned they tend to take the bend out of the lower portion of the
mast. I usually compensate for this with increased capshroud tension,
which recovers the bend in the lower portion of the mast. Without the
capshrouds in place the mast bend is centered up high on the mast
around the upper diamond and it has appeared to me that the lower
portion is very straight and could potentially invert. Guess its good
that we have the capshrouds, which seem to fix this issue.
If this makes no sense to anyone I could take a few pics next week and
post them. That is if I get the boat out on the water.
