What about /dev/sequencer?
Things /dev/sequencer is not:
* SoundFonts
* FM Synthesis
* Anything that makes any kind of sound
Things /dev/sequencer is:
* A device for handling serial flow of midi note data with an internal
timing reference.
* A way to capture performance data sent from a midi controller.
* A way to transmit recorded and or live data to a midi controlled device
If you need to drive an external midi stack or do system exclusive dumps,
then /dev/sequencer is for you.

anch'io sono abbastanza confuso.
Comunque se ti serve sempicemente ascoltare i files midi, non credo che
timidity sia molto inferiore al synth della SBLive. A un ascolto superficiale
mi è parso superiore.
