[newbie] sound

i'm running mandrake 6.0 i have run sndconfig and can play cd's but get
no system sounds or sounds when running quake. i can hear the sample
sounds from sndconfig, how do i enable the other sounds? i have a
creative labs AWE64.

p.s. has anyone heard of any problems with winbloze 98 and amd
processors.
