Since he is removing an hd his partition assigns will change and
therefore his current bootdisk will no longer work.

He could edit his current /etc/fstab for the new assignments prior to
the drive removal but it is easier and safer to let the installer do
such and time wise you are only talking about 15 min to run the
Upgrade/Install.
