As far as WD drives go, they shouldn't be a problem unless used with certain other brand drives on the same IDE channel with Linux. They only do proper CRC checking usin Windoze software aid. Under the Linux kernel, they can corrupt the other drive and themselves. The problem won't occur if the drive is by itself on a IDE channel, or with another WD on that channel. If you're afraid you're in the mixed drives on IDE channel situation, Google's your friend. Also check linux-kernel archives. The situation might have been fixed by now, but WD, AFAIK to date, has refused to help the kernel developers. The only vendor that supports Linux use and developers is IBM, but they've had a lot of recent drive failures too. All vendors have a percentage of failures, and the highest one varies every few months, and is usually limited to certain IDE models.

I sometimes wonder whether much of the problem people have with hard drives is to do with mixing the makes on the same ide - line
Same with partitioning tools , keep to the same one for all partitioning.
