Look for an instance of gmplayer and kill it.  That is if you are running a 
gui.  I know that when I used to let mplayer take the /dev/dsp device 
directly, I invariably had to go out and kill a couple of gmplayer processes 
to get the sound back.  I suspect that it had something to do with codec 
problems.  You might also try using Xine if you continue to have problems 
with mplayer.
