the --update forces urpmi to only use sources defined as an update
source.

eg. you have a official mandrake update mirror for mandrake 8.2, and a
plf urpmi source. if you simply urpmi --auto-select, it tries to
update every single program for which a newer rpm exists (on any
source), even if it's not defined as an update source.

this may result in very messed up systems, depending on what urpmi
sources are configured.
