Read the name of your modem...part of that name includes the word
"SOFT." What this means is that you have a "WinModem." It likely will
NOT work in Linux. While there are a small handful of WinModems which
WILL work under Linux (due to drivers being written for them) they
still suck. The reason they suck (under Linux OR Windows) is that
the modem manufacturers save about $5 by replacing a chip with
software. This is NOT a good thing to do. That chip is there for a
reason!
Go get a REAL modem. Preferably external serial (non-USB) if you want
to be certain you're not getting a WinModem.
