[newbie] telnet

I'm having some problems enabling telnet on a 2.2.9-19mdk version.

The appropriate lines in inetd.conf are uncommented, but when I try 
to telnet from a Mac, WinNt, or LinuxPPC, I get a "Connection closed 
by foreign host" or a time-out.

Ant thoughts?
