John, I'm a bit curious when you say that a lot of LM 7.1 "is just too 
buggy and not thoroughly tested..." what bugs are you referring to? I 
have installed LM 7.1 and haven't had a single problem with it other than 
from my own carelessness or, for lack of a better word, my own stupidity. 
I did my homework, asked questions (and listened to answers), read books, 
absorbed how-to's, went to websites, etc. 

LM 7.1 has found my printer (Canon BJ-6000), my soundcard (SB Live), my 
video card (ATI All in Wonder Pro), my network (DSL with a 3 Com ethernet 
card and I am on a LAN). I have a SCSI hd, a DVD/CD Rom, a CDRW, a Zip 
Drive -- everything is right there on my desktop and accessible. I am 
able to upgrade my applications, I have no problems with my KDE, Star 
Office OR Netscape. So I don't find it "buggy" at all - if it works for 
me then it should work for you...depending on your setup.
