Well, my face is red, the hdd device doesn't show in my mtab either. but mine 
works. So, here is my fstab entry  
/dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip auto 
user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,sync,exec,codepage=850,noauto 0 0
The only difference I can see is that mine does not have rw in the line 
anywhere. try editing that out. Also check your boot config, if you use lilo 
and ML8.1 look at the append line, mine reads so that the hdd is seen as a 
floppy drive :       " hdb=ide-scsi hdd=ide-floppy devfs=nomount quiet"  So 
let me know if  any of these help.
