[26] SUN wot got it
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
As they have a copy of the bid from cuddly Pete to Ridsdale in France (lucky he wasn't
sending state secrets).

SUN reckons deal is

'United will pay £29.1million to sign Ferdinand on a five-year contract - after Leeds
turned down a £29m bid on Friday.
* The Elland Road club could receive a further £4m depending on United's future
performances, taking the total fee to £33.1m.
* £14.9m is payable now, immediately clearing Leeds' debt, with £14.2m due in 12
months.'

They also go on to say:

'Kenyon's draft letter read: "The board of Manchester United plc is pleased to
announce that an agreement has been signed with Leeds United plc for the transfer of
the registration of Rio Ferdinand to Manchester United FC.

"Ferdinand has agreed a five-year contract commencing immediately. The transfer
agreement provides for a cash consideration, included associated costs of £29.1m -
£14.9m payable immediately and £14.2m payable in July 2003.

"In addition further payments, up to a maximum of £4m, will be payable over the next
five years depending on the team performance of Manchester United."

But the deal did not go through without a final hiccup.

After several attempts, Kenyon got a reply saying the wording could not be read and he
had to call on his mobile.'

"Overall the whole thing has been very disappointing and I'm pleased to finally draw
an end to this saga. Leeds fans must remember we have a great squad and now money in
the bank to mount a serious title challenge. They should not be depressed by any
means. I have done the best job for Leeds United."

[13] Leeds fan reaction
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
Ray Fell

"I'd hardly say £30million is giving a player away. I think Peter Ridsdale has
negotiated the situation well - the deal was done before he entered the talks. I think
he's done a very good job. The manager will be sorry he's lost a good player but he
knows where he stands now and he'll be able to try to improve where he needs to
improve. He can now get down to the job in hand. The financial situation is sound for
the moment and Terry Venables can look at where he wants to strengthen. The best way to
get over losing a player like Rio is to get behind the team - and to beat the team who
think they've got the best player."

[12] Tommy Doc on the deal
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on now. You can't turn down a club
like Manchester United. Leeds are a big club but Manchester United, Arsenal and
Liverpool are bigger. It's a great investment by the club. Peter Ridsdale has done a
fantastic job and they've got a great coach in Venables - I think he's the best coach
in the game football-wise - and he'll get the money to strengthen and replace Rio."

[11] More Joe Joe Joe Jordan on Rio

Posted Monday, July 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
"He wants to play in the Champions League and didn't achieve that at Leeds - and he's
grasped the opportunity to play with a club who can get that on a yearly basis. He's
had a very good World Cup and enjoys playing against the best. Now he's got the
opportunity to achieve that ambition - which all footballers should try and do. Leeds
stated they didn't want to sell the player - but they have to do something about the
debt situation at Elland Road They have some very, very good players and (Leeds
chairman) Peter Ridsdale has decided some players have to go. There are limited
players available that can be purchased and that's why you have a £30million fee He's
a young player and you don't want to invest that money in someone who is 29. The
market this summer has been very, very quiet because there is not much money about -
but maybe this purchase will have a bit of a chain reaction."

''We've spent more money than any other club in England and the only player we are
selling is Rio Ferdinand. I didn't want to sell Rio to Manchester United, but they

so talk of a late Arse bid was all, well, a load of arse.

"Rio said he wanted to go to further his career so he's happy and the £30million will
hope Leeds a great deal. Everyone's happy. The ones who will miss out are the fans
because they are losing being able to watch this great young talent. Peter Ridsdale
tried very, very hard to back David O'Leary and make Leeds a big club - but they have
failed in the last two years.''

"I feel a little bit of sympathy for Leeds supporters. They are losing their best
player and they will be absolutely devastated - and what makes it a lot worse for them
is for him to go to Manchester United. But Leeds' loss is Manchester United's gain
because he's such a good player. Leeds can't match United's financial clout and the
centre of defence has been a massive problem for them.''

on and win the championship. He handled the move from West Ham well and I think he'll
blossom into an even better player now."

[4] Shelbourne match report
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, July 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
Lads,

I attended The United Vs Shelbourne match yesterday at Tolka Park. It was brilliant to
hear the cheers and the fantastic support that Roy received from Irish Reds yesterday.
I didn`t hear one boo or jeer and if any ABU`s were at the match they kept their
feelings to themselves. You could see from Roy`s face that it meant a lot to him . He
was genuinely chuffed by the fans loyalty & support.

It reminded me of the way United fans supported David Beckham in 1998 and I was proud
of United`s fans yesterday. When one of our own is in trouble and in need of a dig out
, we were there for him.

The game itself was very one sided, but the form of Van Nistelroy and Veron especially
was very heartening. If Veron can produce that range of passing & vision that he
showed yesterday on a regular basis in the Premiership we may well start to see that
he was well worth the £28M that United paid for him last year.We saw a Van Nistelroy
hat trick ,Forlan`s first goal in a United shirt & Yorke`s last (Probably). All in
all a good day at the office and the promise of a great season ahead.

Best wishes

Red-Ned

>was the case years back?

Re above - Why don't execs have to phone up like everyone else? Perhaps they might
get too cross about pressing re-dial a hundred times, then paying for a National rate
phone call plus 3% added to every transaction. Mine's a debit card and I don't think
that costs anything to process, so why would I be charged £1.20 if I get a Chelsea
ticket - blooming expensive stamp and envelope?
