I'd agree with the second part of this statement but not with the first as I can remember that many years ago when my technique started to improve a certain professional folk singer, who was my brother-in-law at the time, told me - disapprovingly - that I was turning into a violinist rather than a fiddler. All I was doing was gaining better control of the instrument through applying fundamental techniques "properly". Fiddler = bad violinist? Go figure...
