Annemarie, ONW is not part of OBSID but we all work together for the
safety of all. ONW is made up of volunteers who freely give their time
to help to ensure the safety of all.

Ok thanks Marc for explaining the structure . What you say makes
sense. While I believe that the owners /residents in OBS need to be
alert , report and be pro- active , the point is we work and are
extremely busy with our lives to just keep abreast of the demands of
life , and that is why we secure our homes at a huge cost ,
constantly upgrading it , pay for monitoring , pay for armed response
and then also pay for OBSID , to perform tasks that one would expect
from the controlling bodies eg. municipal or government to perform
( which we know by now has just deteriorated to the extent that we
need to take control of it ourselves.)
For that reason , OBSNW /OBSID (whatever) was established to make
sure we get security to perform the job which SAPS should have been
in control of , if we lived in a normal society . So, as we pay
for such services in addition to our rates and taxes , we need to make
sure that the people who are in fact employed to do this task are
competent and are here to serve us and stop this crime affecting us
the way it does.
We have all witnessed the sleeping guards, the guards who walk as
though they are more interested in their cell phones , than in what is
going on around them. What of course is a major problem is that our
crime all over the country , is totally out of control on every level
, so it is even more important to make sure we get value for what we
pay for , as it grossly affects us.
I like your suggestion , which is very positive : What I think we
have to work on, is to get the right affordable mix of patrollers on
foot, on bike and silent scooter, to watch and report, supported by
the community ONW PLUS a well- trained and motivated locally based
“flying squad’' security pair, who can arrest and work with police, as
a police / security trained pair, supported by police and with good
local tracking system that catches the criminals on their escape
route, so every incident ends in an arrest and a conviction! I believe
OBSID IS going for it. That means , there is recognition of what is
wrong in the current system and plans are being made to
drastically improve on what we have. Thugs have become extremely
comfortable with this lack of security performance in OBS and are
therefore having a fantastic time robbing and stealing us , but this
can end up tragically too, as we know. We need a no – tolerance
approach to crime in our community , and therefore if we have guards
that are not fulfilling that function , we will remain at risk, on top
of wasting our funds at the same time. Thugs thrive on weakness. !
I realize the importance of the community taking control, being pro-
active and that is very good, but it is not always possible to have
ears and eyes all over the show and the reason why we are paying
outsiders to perform that task to the best of their ability (not
half measuredly ! ) , which we cannot cope with.
I am happy to know there is recognition of where it should improve to
take back OBS , for the residents and not the thugs to enjoy. !.
Have a great and safe weekend !

Tonight
I think Annemarie has got some facts wrong.
I believe OBSID started with ADT then Vetus Schola and now have
Securitas acting on their behalf but is now regaining control over the
performance rather than leaving it to the agents.
Its not helping if we spend large sums to OBSID who pays another firm
to employ patrollers who are not empowered to do police work and then
people criticise because we expect them to act as trained police which
they are not.
