I'd second that.

I really like the piece of mind that I get with Nortons.  I can rely on it
automatically updating itself every couple of days when I'm online.

Haven't done any research into free ones, but I'm happy with what I've
got...

Nortons 2003 is very good.  A lot less resource hungry compared to previous
versions.
There are cheaper alternatives, although I don't find the $88 AUS it costs
to inhibiting.
