Thanks for all the replies - the choice does appear to be between AVG & Avast - I also would love to know if anyone has tried both...
By the sounds of praise, AVG would be the choice.

I use AVG and like it.  The only prob is that the default
settings are not acceptable.  The one which I believe
must be changed is the frequency at which updates are
preformed.  I use one day - not 30 days.  It is free and
is better, in my opinion.  It beats Norton's anti virus
progamme as far as I am concerned and is a lot cheaper.

What is the best (i.e. cheapest that still does the job) virus scanner - for home use.
