Another one I have used for about 7 years is F-Prot
Available as DOS manual version free, and Windows version for $25 /year
with
Same features as Nortons (automatic updater etc).

For a long time I ran both the Norton (2000) NAV and FPWin real time
scanners - both slowed the PC a bit!. I noticed that when downloading
email using Eudora that Fprot always seemed to find any virus first.

Both F-Fprot DOS and FP-Windows versions use the same virus definitions
files, and you can download them manually yourself if you want.

Also versions for linux etc. Apparently used as engine inside other
scanners.

Chrissy

I don't think this is really fair, Nortons is a good product which is
fighting against
viruses which by definition 'hack' a system, to do this it has to hook
the
system
in some unorthodox ways (wouldn't be much use if it was a well behaved
program)

The only problems I've come across is where people have all the Norton
AV
"realtime" features
turned on (ie it scans every file opened etc ) and then wonder why their
system slows, esp
if they have programs which do a lot of file opens

But this can be disabled or tuned, My 2c worth
