GURPS Traveller is a nice alteration to the rules. The setting material
and the rules are solid (afaict) and workable.

Not really, I think. The two are similar, even related, but they aren't
the same thing and certainly not really competitive with each other. The
GURPS customer base is not the sort to be drawn away to D20, which is
more of a system core with settings and setting-specific rules wrapped
around it.
Some of the core assumptions in D&D and Star Wars would serve to
actively drive away committed GURPS fans. D&D's strength will probably
lie in bringing more people into gaming in the first place.
