In otherwords, find a local press in your area, and ask them the basic
questions:
1) What format do you prefer:
a) eps? pfd? .doc?
b) What sort of media should I deliver it on? (email/zip disk/floppy/cd)
c) What prep-work needs to be done beforehand
2) How much will it cost to print a manual that is X number pages, what page
specs are required, etc.
And so on.. If you go to most print press businesses, and simply tell them
what you are doing, they should be able to give you a ballpark figure. Take
this figure and add 25% to that, then double it. This it the minimal amount
of money you should have to start a business. My reasoning? Easy, as
follows:
Any business should have its initial opening costs in reserve, in order to
be able to handle emergencies, and all prices, unless guaranteed in writing,
are subject to change, etc. Best be prepared.
As to the distribution, etc, thanks to everyone else who pointed to good
