Or you just use some other similar, unrelated content, and the 'sabotaged' OGC
will eventually die off, the last of its kind.

Anything you reference has to be tracable to the actual content.  If you say in
your Section 15 that you used "Mike's Big Book of Spells" and "Mike's Big Book
of Monsters", but you do not have a single monster, spell, or snippet of text
in your work that is traceable to these works, then you are in violation of the
license.
