Perhaps the Server-to-Server REST API is not what you are looking for. It is intended mainly for gadgets that have their own server and that server needs to retrieve some data.
But from your description, it looks like what you are looking for is the JSON-RPC API. The best way to use it is through the orkut Client Library<http://code.google.com/orkut-os-client>.
