Not while critical pieces of libc are closed you can't. This very scenario you describe is currently impossible due to Sun's restrictions on parts of libc

You could, as long as your work didn't necessitate changes to those specific parts of libc (or any other piece of the closed code, it's not like that specific bit is any more or less a barrier).

The closed stuff is problematic, it would be great to see it go away, and any project to make bits of it go away would, I'm sure, be greatly appreciated, but it by no means makes work (in the general sense) impossible.
