I know the memory pressure msg is not directly related, but I can see
the memory being eaten up when running vmstat, untill it freezes.
Did you check with "top" if there is a process that keeps growing and
consumes all the memory?  I suspect that it is the "pkg" utility that
consumes all the memory.  This could be similar to defect 9388:
"pkg image-update needs to cap memory usage"

Yes, not top but prstat -s rss shows pkg using about 400M
That is up to a certain point because as image-update runs with a quite
high priority, console output tends to be very slow and erratic (which
in my opinion is very wrong, you should NOT get unresponsive shell when
running an update).
A "pkg" process that is using huge amounts of memory could explain this...
The system probably has become slow due to pageing; until it freezes.
probably that :-(
in deed pkg must cap memory usage and maybe also run with lower priority ?
