A few data points, for those who are about to do this. On a single-CPU 2GB
system I get:

load averages: 0.30, 0.27, 0.27; up 6+07:48:21 20:10:07
120 processes: 119 sleeping, 1 on cpu
CPU states: 91.6% idle, 0.4% user, 8.0% kernel, 0.0% iowait, 0.0% swap
Kernel: 38225 ctxsw, 309 trap, 672 intr, 442 syscall, 154 flt, 612 pgin
Memory: 2048M phys mem, 34M free mem, 3072M total swap, 2589M free swap

PID USERNAME NLWP PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME CPU COMMAND

...

(It is still 'creating plan' for the last 90 minutes or so). The next box, 8GB
quad-core system, I get:

load averages: 3.55, 3.49, 3.34; up 6+04:09:53 20:18:58

PID USERNAME NLWP PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME CPU COMMAND
  2207 ci 17 10 0 1720M 1684M cpu/0 109.8H 49.76% VirtualBox
  3270 ci 17 51 0 845M 817M cpu/1 226:08 24.90% VBoxHeadless
  3466 root 1 60 0 1369M 1341M sleep 11:16 5.94% pkg
  2229 ci 14 59 0 359M 157M sleep 77:31 0.77% firefox-bin

The update started a little later than the first one and is almost finished
(actually just finished).

Earlier updated my laptop (2GB dual core, HP nx6310) without any problems.
