1.  You are correct in wanting a 2 port USB card.
   They are more reliable than the 4 port cards.
   I advise buying a  USB 1 card.
   The 2.0 cards require system OS X to run.
   The USB 1 cards are about $10.00.
2.  You can buy OS 9.1 from
   www.OtherWorldComputing.com   for $50.
   If you buy it elsewhere,
   make sure it is a version
   that will install on *ANY* Mac
3.  I am pretty sure that the USB drivers
   are part of sys 9.1. However,
   if you use sys 8.6, you will
   download USB drivers 1.4.1 from
   www.apple.com
4.  Sys 8.6 is perfectly OK.   9.1 is better.
   USB cards work fine and dandy under OS 8.6.
