You'll need at least 8.6 to use Apple's 1.4.1 USB adapter software. 
Suppposedly you can use USB with 8.1-8.5 as well with an earlier 
version, but 8.6 is already being left behind so it doesn't make sense 
to go with an earlier OS.

9.1 is the highest OS that installs unassisted on PCI Macs. Anything 
higher and you'll need to use one of the third party install utilities.
