I'm not a Mac expert, but I am pretty sure Apple has some sort of internet
connection sharing (ICS). You could either:
A. Hook up Mac via USB and another Mac via Ethernet with a cross over cable
(no switch/hub involved) and use ICS to use both on your cable high speed
connection.
B. Buy a simple router from your local computer retailer (preferably not
Best Buy) or off ebay (I got mine on ebay for $10 and it has a built in
10/100 Ethernet switch) and hook modem to router and then Macs to router.
C. if possible network through USB and hook modem via Ethernet.

FYI, the best speed you can get on a cable line (I could be wrong) is 10Mbs.
The best speed you will probably get on your cable line is 2-3Mbs. USB
transmits at 11MBs (big B for bytes not bits, much faster) or USB 2.0 which
is a lot more, I forget how much. So even hooking the modem up via USB isn't
going to slow you down, it will however be much more of a pain in the a**. I
have my PC (oh God stone him now!) and my Mac (oh its ok, he's cool, he's
got a Mac) on the same router, I even have another switch hooked up to that
for laptops and other PC's and occasional Macs when they come by. It is very
very very simple. Probably even more simple than this Macintosh I am typing
on.
