As for the point, I'd assume it's 2-fold. First, cable internet that's faster than 10 Mbps is offered in some markets and is supposed to spreading. Second, there are switches on the market that don't do well with mixed connection rates. Just because your internet connection isn't over 1.5 Mbps, that doesn't mean you want your file sharing rate limited to 10 Mbps.

Third point: 10/100 chipsets are cheaper than old 10baseT chipsets, because of volume of manufacture; no one's making 10/baseT ones much anymore.


This is why everyone's got USB 2.0 chipsets now even in systems that only support USB 1.1 (like Apple's last G4's)
