I never had any luck trying to get 9.2.2 into my 9600/500 (XLR8).
The
easiest way to a proper install that I can think of would be to get
9.1 on
the 9600 and then finish the installation on the 8600, or some other
machine
that 9.2.2 _will_ install on. The flat out easiest way would be to
install
9.2.2 on a machine it _will_ install on (using the 9600's hard disk)
and
then switch the disk back to the 9600.
There is a website, www.os9forever.com, that makes a program called OS
9 Helper. It allows many unsupported computers (such as 8600's and
9600's) to run OS 9.2.2. I've used it successfully on my 5400/120 and
on my 9500/400G3 with no problems. If you are going to be running X on
these machines, it is also useful, as 9.2.2 has better Classic
compatability in X than other 9.x versions.
