Yes, I am sure it is doable.  You probably have an off/on switch
on the external and use it when you need it (probably mostly not
needed). You would need to duplicate that, otherwise wonder no
more..., unique ID needed (jump it right or know its default,
how to terminate if on end of chain or not if not and fiddling
about with the openings in the Mac...

Why would you bother?
