Ralph and Rocky, I forgot to mention to you that an IRQ sharing issue could cause this. Sound cards are more sensitive to sharing IRQ's than other devices. Go to system info and expand the 'trees' until you find "IRQ's" and see what is sharing an IRQ with the sound card. Also look in the device manager, and in XP you have to look under 'view' on the toolbar and select 'resources by selection' and you'll see the IRQ tree. Should be similar in 98x. Ralph, in your case there's less of a chance that being the problem since you tried the integrated sound AND a PCI sound card, but it is still possible both could have used the same IRQ. Have you got the latest VIA 4 in 1 driver pack? You should not be able to see both the sound card and the VIA codec at the same time. The integrated sound should be disabled when you're using the PCI sound card. According to that info below, they are both being used at the same time.
Rocky have you tried another sound card? In both cases it could be the support app's installed along with the drivers (like mixers, etc). You may have to try to remove all of them and JUST install the sound card driver.
