I don't think I missed any details in this thread, but out of curiosity, can you access the drive from the command prompt?

It's not that the "Mass Storage Device" isn't found or that any hard drive put into it, isn't found. In both cases the computer finding them is not a problem 'cos like I said, "Computer Management" says they are there and shows they are there and even gives the drive a letter. It's simply that even though a drive letter is allocated, that drive letter does not appear in "Windows Explorer". Has that shed anymore light on the peculiar problem. A point in passing......I have tried connecting this device both through an unpowered 4 port hub and also directly into a USB port at the back of the Toshiba with the same end result!!
