And Adobe agrees with you as well. That is why we introduced Adobe
Document Server for Reader Extensions.
This is a server-side product that allows you - the owner or developer
of a form - to add rights to the PDF file itself such that when opened
in Reader features required for a forms workflow (i.e. fill & save; fill
& sign & save; email; and add comments) are enabled.
This enables your users to use Adobe Reader to complete and save forms.
- No additional desktop software (other than Reader)
- No IT issues of deployment
- Upgrading the software is free (right?)
- Ability to work off line is a given
- Ability to email filled form back (is an option)
This enables the "Form Owner" to easily drop a PDF into ADSfRE and a
newly reader-enabled PDF comes out.
- no programming required.
- server-side "black box" - PDF in; special PDF out
If you would like more information about ADSfRE - please visit
http://www.adobe.com/products/server/readerextensions/main.html
I am happy to supply a sample form or two that have different rights
enabled if you would like to see the Adobe Reader user's experience.

Just like to add that previously the Acrobat Approval,
which will allow
saving PDF form with filled-in data, is probably less
then $49. It's really
hard to justify why spend as much money, but get less
quality/features.
However, the more important point is that requiring
every form user to
purchase/install software just to save his filled-in
form is not really the
best solution. For example, a city should provide its
residents a fillable,
savable, and editable e-form without requiring all the
residents to purchase
any software. We believe it should be the form
provider's responsibility to
make the form more useful, not the form users.
