Matt,

This is even more confusing. Are you claiming that if the Quark XPress 5
document has text set in Helvetica, that in fact the font (i.e., Helvetica)
IS being found and successfully embedded, but that if NO text has been so-set,
then you get the error message (your comment "when it is used, there is no
message ... the job will succeed)?

The other question, then, is do you actually have Type 1 Helvetica installed on
the system that is doing the distillation AND is Distiller configured to look
in the directory in which the Helvetica font is actually installed in to 
access same?

Also, I think you need to look at the underlying PostScript with an editor to
see if there are any references to Helvetica.
