They could but then it wouldn't be a Z-1p anymore. It would very likely cost
significantly more than the MZ-S. Fair enough.
The Z-1p was obviously geared for volume. It didn't sell in those volumes. My Pentax
rep told me that they practically speaking stopped selling the Z-1p years ago and that
it didn't really ever sell at all. Not only because of this fact, but also due to the
fact that the 35mm film-based slr market is expected to shrink, cameras like the Z-1p
will probably never see the light of day anymore.
The Z-1p basically drowned in the noise from the competition. It was just another
capable body. The only thing going for it late in its life was its attractive price
something that probably meant that Pentax was loosing money on it. I'm sure a Z-1p
type of camera with 11-point AF, 6 fps and magnesium shell would be well received. But
then it would compete head on with the EOS-1v and then it should also offer IS and USM
as well. And even so it would then just match the EOS-1v; it would make some Pentax
users happy but wouldn't convince a single Canon user. The MZ-S after all is unique.
It won't please all but it offers an unique alternative to Nikon/Canon/Minolta.
