i think dust & grit is a potentially worse enemy; earlier this summer i was "hiking" (more like slogging) in the Great Sand Dunes and there were points where i was head-to-toe sand-blasted by 20+ mph winds; i only took my camera out when there was less sand in the air, but still i had to brush down my camera & lens very carefully afterward
