To my knowledge, the Minolta Scan Dual II does not do any sharpening.
My guess is there could be a difference in the type of light source.
The light in the lid of the Epson Perfection seems more diffused.

I am seeing a difference between scanning Portra 160NC and slides.  I
don't know if it is a function of VueScan or not.  Maybe I will try
the Epson software to see how it works.  I also have to do a couple of
big prints to see what I think.  I'll keep you posted.
